Beijer measures first vehicles with only CAN FD: Kia EV3 and Audi Q6 e-tron

On a daily basis, Beijer engineers measure the latest vehicles entering the market and continue to lead the way in unlocking complex vehicle data. Recently, the Kia EV3 and Audi Q6 e-tron were added to the Beijer CAN database. These are the first vehicles with only CAN FD networks – an important milestone in the evolution of vehicle data and communication.

The future of vehicle data: CAN FD

CAN FD (Controller Area Network – Flexible Data Rate) is the next generation of CAN technology, enabling vehicles to transmit larger amounts of data more quickly and efficiently.

More and more modern vehicles are equipped with CAN FD, which is essential for their complex electronic systems. However, in addition to CAN FD, there was always ‘classic’ CAN to be found. That is no longer the case in these Kia and Audi models.

Available CAN signals per vehicle

Our engineers have made the following signals available per vehicle:

  • Kia EV3: speed, high beam, indicators, charging status and charger connected.
  • Audi Q6 e-tron: speed, odometer, switched power supply, charging status, reverse signal and brake.

CAN FD solution: the BCI Next Gen

To support vehicles and equipment with CAN FD networks, as well as those with classic CAN, Beijer has developed the BCI Next Gen (BCI-NG). This new generation CAN interfaces offers extensive support for CAN FD and is ready for the future.

Key features of the BCI Next Gen:

  • Supports CAN FD in addition to classic CAN protocols
  • Enhanced functionality for remote CAN logging
  • Can be used as a probe for remote CAN bus analysis
  • Equipped with a USB-C connection
