In addition to drunkenness, inappropriate speed is an important cause of serious traffic accidents. Driver assistance with speeding behavior is therefore a crucial aid to prevent accidents. Navigation systems do provide speed information, but have little impact on driving behavior and do not provide feedback on driving behaviour. Since speed information is available through various channels (traffic sign detection, speed maps, open government data, road sign databases), it can be used as an ADAS system (Advanced Driver Assistance System) in vehicles. ISA offers far-reaching assistance or even dynamic adjustment. There are systems that advise against speeding violations and give an auditory alarm (open ISA), adjust the speed (semi-open ISA) and even limit it (closed ISA). ISA as a principle has been demonstrated many times as an effective solution for behavioral change and has received support at European level, but the success of ISA with individuals, companies and governments remains very limited.

The project “ISA in practice” tries to take the next step and will paint a clear picture of the possible Return-On-Investment (consumption, damage, accidents) for companies as well as the social (road safety, emissions, quality of life) and ecological ( particulate matter, CO2 emissions) impact. The focus is therefore not only on a technical ISA demonstration, but applied to theoretical and real cases in consultation with various stakeholders. The project aims at the successful introduction and upscaling of ISA and related solutions in concrete applications through real-time speed assistance/adjustment for the driver as well as reporting of driving behavior for a fleet manager.

The “ISA in practice” project is supported by the Belgian and Dutch parties FOD Mobiliteit en Vervoer (BE), Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer (BE), Departement Mobiliteit en Openbare Werken (BE), Vias Institute (BE), Antwerp Management School Smart Mobility (BE), stad Helmond (NL) en de provincie Overijssel (NL).
